By 2025, 463 exabytes of data will be generated each day? That’s 1 billion gigabytes or 1018 bytes PER DAY!
As more and more people go online (as of 2021, there were 4.66 billion active Internet users) for both economic and social reasons, concerns about data security and privacy are on the rise.
- Where is my data going?
- Who is using it?
- Is someone misusing it?
These are questions that are foremost on the minds of both individuals and corporations.
Here’s where data privacy laws come in.
According to UNCTAD, 71% of countries (137 out of 194) have legislations to protect user data and privacy. India is one of these 137 countries.
Unfortunately, many Indian individuals or businesses are not aware of these legislations. This lack of awareness can create serious problems for their customers, employees, and management. In particular, when a company loses data following a cyberattack or data breach, it can affect their reputation and financial position. It can also lead to costly legal actions or fines.
To create awareness about the importance of data security and privacy, The Emerging India Forum (TEIF) conducted a Koffee Conversation on Data Privacy on 15th April 2022.
At this event, data privacy experts Khushbhu Jain and Yogendra Raj shared great insights about the importance and benefits of data privacy protection. They touched upon global laws such as GDPR, the world’s toughest privacy and data security law to protect consumers in the European Union.
They explained how in general, data protection laws grant individuals several rights, such as the right to data portability, the right to be informed, the right to rectification, etc. Since August 2017, the right to privacy is a fundamental right for Indian citizens. Companies that collect or process the data of Indian citizens are obligated to protect individuals’ data and their right to privacy. They must also implement safeguards to prevent the misuse or unauthorised use of this data.
Metadata is a huge source of worry for companies since it can lead to serious data breaches that affect the privacy of individuals. This then can create many of the problems explained above.
